It could be weeks or even months before Drew Lock is allowed to step foot on the Broncos’ practice fields. It could be longer before he returns to Empower Field as their starting quarterback.
So, for now, a field some 25 minutes east of his parents’ home in Kansas City will do.
For much of the last two months, before a stay-at-home order for the city went into effect, Lock has used this field and the guidance of his trusted quarterbacks coach to help him prepare for the unknown.
Only five starts into his NFL career, Lock has to now adapt to a new offense, a new play caller, a new positional coach, a new playbook, many new teammates and a sports world that looks wholly unlike the one he left in December. He may not have OTAs or a full training camp to get ready for the season, which — despite the NFL’s optimism — may not even start on time.
